How Long to Keep CCTV Footage? Storage Guide | Auztech

Wondering how much storage your security camera installation needs? Auztech Security explains NVR size and footage retention simply.

Cameras are only useful if the footage is still there when you need it. Storage is the part people forget about during security camera installation, and it's why some homeowners find the key clip was overwritten days ago.

Typical Retention Choices

  • Motion-only recording: stretches storage furthest, good for quiet homes
  • Continuous recording: captures everything, best for businesses and busy entrances
  • Mixed: continuous on key cameras, motion-only elsewhere

There's no single correct number of days. Many households aim for a few weeks, so a delayed discovery (like returning from holiday) is still covered. Businesses can have extra obligations, so check with your adviser.

Simple Ways to Keep More Footage

  • Choose H.265 compression
  • Use 4K only where detail matters, such as the driveway
  • Add a larger drive when you set up
  • Export important clips straight away

A proper camera installation sizes the recorder to your retention goal. For cctv installation melbourne jobs, Auztech Security sets this up before we leave. Curious about pricing? See our CCTV cost guide.

The Best Home Security Camera System in 2026: An Installer’s Honest Comparison

Image
The Best Home Security Camera System in 2026: An Installer’s Honest Comparison Every “best security camera” article you’ve read was written by someone who has never drilled a hole in a wall. They rank cameras by spec sheet. We install these systems in Melbourne homes every week, then get called back when something doesn’t work — which teaches you very different things about which cameras are actually good. This is a straight comparison of the four brands we install: Dahua , Hikvision , HiLook and Uniview . We stock all of them. We have no reason to push you toward one. First: The Thing Nobody Tells You The brand matters less than the install. A $2,000 camera system mounted at the wrong height, aimed at the wrong angle, with the recorder sitting in plain sight by the front door, is worse than an $800 system installed properly. The three things that actually determine whether your cameras identify an intruder: Height and angle. Cameras mounted too high see the top of a head. 2.5-3...
