If you're deep in floor plans and fixture schedules for a new build, an intercom system is easy to leave as an afterthought. It shouldn't be — it's one of the cheapest things to plan for now and one of the most annoying to retrofit later.

Where It Belongs in Your Build Timeline
  • Frame stage: this is when cabling for the intercom, front gate, and door lock integration should be run, alongside any other pre-wiring.
  • Fixed-out stage: the panel itself, indoor station, and any gate hardware get installed and connected.
  • Handover: phone app access, video testing, and a walkthrough before you move in.
Where to Physically Position It

For a standalone home, the intercom typically sits at the front gate or fence line, with an indoor unit near the main living area — not tucked away somewhere nobody hears it. For townhouse developments or multi-unit builds, each unit generally needs its own call button wired back to a shared panel.
